Abstract:

ABSTRACT        Background and Objectives: Mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus is a widely distributed disease in cattle, goats and sheep. The infection is often subclinical in cattle, leading to reduced milk production and quality, but acute catarrhal or even gangrenous inflammation may also occur. The aim of this study was to investigate resistance of S. aureus isolates from bovine subclinical mastitis to a number of antibiotics.           Methods: Milk samples were collected from 120 cows in different regions of Tabriz, Iran. Milk samples were cultured and bacteriological identification was performed. Antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates was assessed by determining minimum inhibitory concentration. Plasmid DNA was extracted by an alkaline lysis method.           Results: The highest frequency of resistance was observed against gentamicin (100%) and β- lactam antibiotics including amoxicillin (96%), ampicillin (40%) and penicillin (96%). The isolates mostly contained large plasmids, which might harbor acquired antibiotic resistance.          Conclusion: The results confirm the high frequency of antibiotic resistance among staphylococci isolated from bovine subclinical mastitis.            Keywords: Anti-infective Agents, Cattle, Staphylococcus Aureus, Mastitis, Plasmids.

Frequency of specific agr groups and antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bovine mastitis in the northeast of Iran

Staphylococcus aureus is generally regarded as a leading cause of mastitis in dairy cattle. The aim of this study was to investigate the pattern of agr groups and any possible relationship between agr groups and antibiotic resistance among S. aureus strains isolated from bovine mastitis in Northeast of Iran. For this purpose, a total of 300 bovine mastitic mi...

A high prevalence of tylosin resistance among Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from bovine mastitis

The macrolides appear to have considerable effects for treatment of bovine mastitis because of excellent diffusion into the mammary gland, long half-life, low protein binding, high intracellular concentration and lipid solubility. Acquired resistance to macrolides in Staphylococcus aureus is primarily related to target-site modification through acquisition of an erm gene. In t...

High Frequency of biofilm related genes (icaD, fnbA, icaA and clfA) among Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bovine with subclinical mastitis

Background and aim: Regarding to the importance of Staphylococcus aureuscolonization in bovine mastitis and the role of biofilm in its pathogenesis, the aim of the present study were to assessment of biofilm production and identification of biofilm related genes among S. aureus isolated from bovine with subclinical mastitis. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 502 m...

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern of Staphylococcus aureus Strains Isolated from Hospitalized Patients in Tehran, Iran

Staphylococcus aureus is a major bacterial pathogen that causes different community- and hospital-acquired infections. Over time, strains of S. aureus have become resistant to different antibiotics including penicillinase-resistant penicillins. Having data on the local antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of this pathogen is necessary for selection of appropriate...

Antibiotic Susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus Spp. Isolated from some Hospitals in Tehran

Abstract Background and Objective: Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are the leading nosocomial pathogens in Iran. We aimed at evaluating the resistance patterns of Staphylococcus aureus and enterococci to the antibiotics recommended by Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Material and Methods: Two-hu...

Antibiotic Resistance Pattern and Frequency of mecA Gene in Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Shohada Hospital, Tabriz

Introduction: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can cause serious and life-threatening hospital- and community-acquired infections. Colonized and infected patients represent the most important reservoir of MRSA in health care facilities. Therefore, in this study, MRSA isolates collected from Shohada Hospital in Tabriz were evaluated for the frequency of mecA gene and their anti...
